With the bicentennial of the State of Mississippi approaching in 2017, now is the time to restore the original meeting place for the state legislature. Since the state took control of the property in the 1970’s, minimal work has been performed to maintain the structures. In the first phase of work, emergency structural repairs to the East and West Wings and President’s House will be addressed. Future phases are planned to include floor strengthening and architectural restorations of the buildings in order to allow public access to more locations on campus.
Jefferson College, located in Washington, MS, is the second oldest military school in the United States, behind only West Point. It is also the site of the signing of the Mississippi Constitution in 1817 and the arraignment of Aaron Burr. The campus is no longer the location of an operating military school, but is still an important part of Mississippi history.
