After experiencing foundation movements of Fitzhugh Hall, leading to the demolition of the East Wing, Belhaven University decided to be proactive regarding the structural integrity of the sister building, Preston Hall. A structural survey was performed to investigate the existing construction and condition of the structure. After investigation, it was determined that additional structural components were needed to prevent a similar fate of the East Wing of Fitzhugh Hall. Repairs and strengthening of the existing structure were performed inside the building. In addition, exterior pilasters were added to stabilize the exterior walls. The pilasters were designed to mimic the existing pilasters on the north wall of the building, thus not negatively affecting the architectural of the historic building.
